skills and prepares you for a career in technical and scientific writing. Participants

basis through the Open University program.

University Graduate Certificate in Children's Literature |

Do you love children's literature? Do you want to explore it at an advanced
graduate level without undertaking all the courses required for a master's degree?
San Diego State University's Department of English and Comparative Literature
now offers a 12-unit graduate certificate in children's literature, allowing
educational professionals, editors, librarians, parents, and others to study
children's literature to meet their professional development requirements and
acquire graduate credits as a means to career advancement, or to enhance an
appreciation of this literature.

Study Day or Night with Convenient Six-week Online Courses
Update your skills and discover a new talent, or chart a career path at your own pace and at your own convenience with our noncredit, instructor-led, online courses. Each course runs for six weeks and consists of 12 lessons. The lessons are supplemented by interactive quizzes, assignments, tutorials, and online discussion areas. All materials will be available to you over the Internet. Read your lessons and ask questions of your instructor at times that are most convenient to you.

Beginning Writer's Workshop |
Want to learn the secret of good writing? It’s simply a matter of putting the right words together! Learn how to create a pattern that communicates what you want someone to know, learn, feel, experience, or grasp.
Geared for beginning writers, this course will focus on basic skills, aimed at building writing confidence. Some of the topics you will learn through a series of user-friendly classroom exercises include:
- writing about personal experiences and emotions
- interpreting and writing a news event
- evaluating your own writing
- moving from thinking about writing to actually doing it.
With each exercise, you will increasingly become a better writer – and have fun doing it.

Instructor: John Freeman spent 12 years with The San Diego Union-Tribune as a nationally syndicated television columnist and sportswriter. He has experience in public relations and sports marketing (New York Yankees, National Basketball Assoc.). He currently is director of communications of Knight and Carver Yacht Center.
