SDSU Writers' Conference - 2008

MAKING APPOINTMENTS

The SDSU Writers' Conference offers two distinct opportunities to meet top editors, agents, and industry professionals one-on-one to go over your work and offer specific advice about how to take your project forward - consultation appointments and advance reading appointments. Editors, agents, and industry professionals will be available to discuss many specific subject areas.

Consultation Appointments
Consultation appointments are designed as an opportunity for a question-and-answer discussion with a publishing professional. If appropriate, you may bring a one-page synopsis to generate greater understanding of your specific project. However these sessions should NOT be considered only as an opportunity to "pitch" to particular faculty members regarding their interest in publishing or representing your specific project. Rather, these sessions should be an opportunity to receive information and/or to hear general feedback concerning the viability, marketability, or quality of your idea or synopsis. Both editors/agents will participate in consultation appointments.

Advance Reading Appointments
These one-on-one appointments require that you submit the opening pages of your manuscript to be read in advance of your appointment. These appointments are best suited for advanced writers. Only editors will participate in advance reading appointments.

Rules and Guidelines for Consultation Appointments and Advance Reading Appointments

Each participant may schedule up to three appointments with attending editors and agents. Consultation appointments and advance reading appointments may be scheduled in any combination up to three, however in the interest of fairness, no more than one appointment with an editor is allowed for each participant. Requests for appointments that do not conform to guidelines will be returned unscheduled.

Consultation Appointment Rules

  1. You must be registered with paid conference fees AND paid consultation fees to participate in a consultation. (All fees may be paid together and submitted with the registration form and appointment request form.)
  2. Conference and consultation fees must be received by January 7, 2008. If editors and agents have available appointments, consultation appointments will be scheduled at the conference, 4-6 pm Friday, January 25, 2008 and 7:30-10 am Saturday, January 26, 2008. No appointments will be scheduled after 10 am Saturday, January 26. Please note: no guarantees are made that appointments will be available after the January 7 deadline has passed.
  3. Consult the biographies of the editors and agents to determine the best person with whom to discuss your work. Consultations are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. Requested editors/agents are not guaranteed. No more than one appointment of any kind is allowed with an editor.
  4. DO NOT SEND YOUR MANUSCRIPT PAGES OR SYNOPSIS. IF DESIRED, YOU MAY BRING THEM TO YOUR CONSULTATION.
  5. Your appointment schedule will be distributed to you when you check in at the conference. Consultations are ten minutes each.
  6. Go to the Consultation and Advance Reading Appointment Form page. You will need to print out the form and complete the required information. Your submission should be sent to:

    College of Extended Studies
Attn: SDSU Writers' Conference (Consultation Appointments)
    5250 Campanile Drive, Room 2503
    San Diego, CA 92182-1920

  7. Missed consultation appointments will not be rescheduled or refunded.

Advance Reading Appointment Rules

  1. You must be registered for the conference.
  2. Conference fee, advance reading fee AND submission must be received no later than January 2, 2008 to participate in an advance reading appointment. (Paying of fees alone will not reserve an advance reading appointment. Submission must be received to schedule an appointment.)
  3. Consult the biographies of the editors to determine the best person with whom to discuss your work. Advance reading appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis once fees are paid and submissions are received. Requested editor is not guaranteed.
  4. For your advance reading appointment, send TWO copies of the FIRST ten pages of your manuscript in a 9x12 envelope. (Pages must be typed, double-spaced, with your name on each page.) A copy of the Appointment Form and the fees (if not already paid) must accompany each submission. Late, faxed, or emailed submissions will not be accepted.
  5. Your appointment schedule will be distributed to you when you check in at the conference. An advance reading appointment is approximately ten minutes.
