The Asian Studies in Thailand is a six-week intensive study of language and culture of
this Southeast Asian country. This program will open the doors to the culture of Thailand
and provide a unique cross-cultural experience that will enrich your life.
- Open to SDSU students, students at other colleges and universities, and the general
public
- Participants earn six units of SDSU resident credit upper division General Education
or graduate credit; up to nine units can be earned for additional unit purchase fee based
on instructor's approval
- Courses are taught in English by SDSU and host university faculty
- Living accommodations at the university dormitory
- This program will enable you to:
- Immerse yourself in the language and culture of Thailand,
- Understand global concerns of politics, business, and security,
- Learn about life in Thailand from the "inside," and
- Understand more fully the mores and values that influence the culture.
Location
The program will take place at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand's premier institution.
The university is an oasis located in the heart of Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. All
participants will enroll in six units of SDSU Asian Studies prior to departure and will
receive credit upon the successful completion of the program in Thailand.
Academic Program
The faculty of Chulalongkorn University will teach all classes and will focus on language
instruction, Thai culture, and global concerns. Classes are small and are held Monday-Thursday,
from 9 am to 12 pm. This will include guest lectures from prominent Thai officials.
Course Offerings
The program includes six units of SDSU resident credit in Asian Studies, which can be used
for upper division general education. Students can request approval to take one to three
additional units (maximum of nine units total) at a per unit cost. Students needing a class
other than those listed or needing additional units should discuss the matter with program
faculty.
Included and Optional Activities
In addition to numerous trips to tourist and cultural destinations throughout Bangkok, one
or two weekend excursions may be included, in particular to the ancient historical site
of Ayuthaya. This and other destinations have been painstakingly excavated and are exquisitely
maintained. A highly of the program is the week-long trip to the north, including sites
at Sukhothai and Srisatchanalai, the cities of Chiangmai and Chiangrai, and the Golden Triangle
where the three countries of Burma, Laos, and Thailand meet. This will include a Mekong
River excursion.
Accommodations
Participants will stay at Sasa House, a three-star accommodation for foreign guests, located
on the campus of Chulalongkorn University. These are comfortable double rooms with private
bath, veranda, and refrigerator, and are maintained on a daily basis.
Airfare
Each student is responsible for making his/her own travel arrangements as airfare is not
included in the program price. Please see our additional information

reports, and administrative services)

- Thai visa (approximately $50 USD)
Student Visa
A student visa is not required, but is highly recommended. A U.S. passport is good for only
30 days, while a student visa is valid for 60 days. A single-entry student visa costs $50,
or $125 for a multiple-entry visa.
This program is offered by the College of Extended Studies in cooperation with the SDSU
Department of Asian Studies and has the approval of San Diego State University and the Office
of the Chancellor, California State University.
