SDSU and Moscow State University (MGU) will conduct a three-week study of today’s Russian
criminal justice system. Students are housed at MGU’s dormitory. One hour of Russian will
be taught daily. Field trips to police stations, courts, and cultural sites of Moscow are
included. This is an academic program open to all areas of American criminal justice, including
law enforcement, attorneys, and court professionals.
- Open to SDSU students, students at other colleges and universities, and the general
public
- Participants earn three units of SDSU extension credit in Criminal Justice Administration
- Courses are taught in English by SDSU and Moscow State University faculty
- Living accommodations within Moscow State University dormitories
- This program will enable you to:
- Immerse yourself in the language and culture of Russia,
- Meet the CJA practicum requirement,
- Learn about life in Russia from the "inside," and
- Understand more fully the mores and values that influence the laws of the country.
Location
The immersion program will take place at Moscow State University (MGU), the Harvard of the
former Soviet Union. The university is located in Moscow, Russia's capital. All participants
will enroll in three units of SDSU Criminal Justice Administration prior to departure and
will receive credit upon the successful completion of the program in Russia.
Academic Program
Classes will be held daily from 9 am to 12:30 pm. Language instruction will be taught by
an on-site professor, and criminal justice instruction will be provided by SDSU faculty
and guest lecturers from Moscow State and subject experts, such as attorneys and judges.
Course Offerings
The program includes three units of SDSU extension credit. Students needing a class other
than CJA 496X should discuss the matter with the program faculty.
Included and Optional Activities
Three field trips related to the criminal justice system, focusing on "cops, courts,
and corrections," will be arranged. (Approval is being sought for the group to visit
key facilities. These are "sensitive" areas and details are still being negotiated.)
In addition, participants will have two excursions to major cultural sites organized by
Moscow State University. These excursions could include a visit to the Kremlin, art museums,
parks, and the KGB Museum. Optional excursions can include a weekend trip to St. Petersburg.
Accommodations
Participants will be housed in a dormitory at Moscow State University with other international
students. Accommodations in Russian dormitories are spartan by American standards, and there
are few luxuries or conveniences. This too is part of the experience and it will give you
a realistic view of how Russian students live. Campus cafeteria meals cost on average US$2.
The dormitory officials provide extra security to protect the possessions of international
students. Laundry facilities are available in the building as well.

included in the program price. We recommend Kosmos
Travel for the most reliable and affordable airfare to Russia.
