SDSU and the National University of Ireland will offer a creative writing program in Galway,
Ireland that is designed for SDSU students, but open to creative writers from the community.
Program fee includes six SDSU units, in-country shared lodging with kitchen facilities,
and field trips, including a visit to Yeats’ Tower and two nights on Inishbofen Island.
Visiting Irish poets and fiction writers will provide workshops and readings.

- Participants earn six units of SDSU resident undergraduate or graduate credit
- Courses are taught in English by SDSU and host university faculty
- Living accommodations at the university apartments
- This program will enable you to:
- Immerse yourself in the language and culture of Ireland,
- Improve the quality of your writing skills,
- Learn about life in Ireland from the "inside," and
- Understand more fully the mores and values that influence the culture and literature.
Location
The program will take place at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The university
offers art, literature, and Celtic studies as some of their programs to more than 10,000
students a year. All participants will enroll in three units of modern literature and three
units creative writing (Deptment of English and Comparative Literature) prior to departure
and will receive credit upon the successful completion of the program in Ireland.
Academic Program
SDSU faculty and National Institute of Ireland, Galway faculty will teach classes/workshops.
All students will take modern Irish literature, and then have the option of poetry or fiction
workshops.
Course Offerings
SDSU English 594 or English 798: Modern Irish Literature (three units). This seminar involves
reading and analyzing the development and style of modern English literature in Ireland
with specific attention paid to American parallels. (Graduate students may enroll in the
course as English 798: Special Study.) AND you will select a workshop in EITHER poetry or
fiction writing.
Included and Optional Activities
In addition to numerous trips to tourist and cultural destinations throughout Galway and
surrounding regions, included in the program cost are guest workshops and readings by Irelands'
prominent writers. Past guests included John McGahern, Eavan Boland, Theo Dorgan, Paula
Meehan, Mary Morrisey, Pat McCabe and Dermot Healy. In addition, there will be opportunities
to spend time on Inishbofin, the Aran Islands, and the Burren district of County Clare.
Accommodations
Participants will be housed in student apartments near/at the National University of Ireland,
Galway. These are comfortable double rooms with private baths, sparsely but adequately furnished.
Each apartment includes a kitchen facility.

- Tuition costs at National University of Ireland, Galway (including orientation, 90+
hours of instruction, academic reports, and administrative services)

Airfare
Each student is responsible for making his/her own travel arrangements as airfare is not
included in the program price. Please see our additional information

Student Visa
This program does not require a student visa because it is less than 90 days in length.
However, if you plan to stay in Ireland longer than 90 days, you must obtain a visa or leave
Ireland and re-enter it through a non-European Union Country. Please contact the Consulate
General of Ireland for more information regarding visas. The process of obtaining a
visa is lengthy, so begin early. You are responsible for your immigration status.
This program is offered by the College of Extended Studies in cooperation with the SDSU
Deptment of English and Comparative Literature and has the approval of San Diego State University
and the Office of the Chancellor, California State University.
