The Spanish Language Immersion Program in Cuernavaca is a four-week, intensive study of the language and culture of Mexico. Cuernavaca, which means "place of trees and water" and is also known as "The City of Eternal Spring" is a popular vacation center because of its sunny climate and abundance of flowering trees and shrubs. A small city of about 400,000, it has many cultural and historic sites, as well as many of the advantages of a larger city. Its proximity to Mexico City also enables the participants to visit the many museums, prehistoric ruins and colonial buildings, theatres, markets, and nightlife of the capital of Mexico. In addition, Acapulco, with its famous beaches, offers a weekend break from the rigors of the program.

  • Open to SDSU students, students at other colleges and universities, and the general public
  • Participants earn four units of SDSU resident credit in Spanish; up to six units can be earned for an additional unit purchase fee
  • Courses are taught by the faculty of the Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies
  • Living accommodations with Spanish-speaking families throughout Cuernavaca
  • This program will enable you to:
    • Immerse yourself in the language and culture of Mexico,
    • Improve the quality and quantity of your spoken Spanish,
    • Learn about life in Cuernavaca from the "inside," and
    • Understand more fully the mores and values that influence the language.

Location
The Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies (UNINTER), at Universidad Internacional. Classes will focus on vocabulary, grammar, conversation and will provide an integrated language and cultural learning experience. There will be a maximum of five students in classes where individual participation is imperative. Other classes, such as the cultural classes, may be larger but not more than ten students.

Academic Program
The Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies will teach all language and culture classes. They are held five days a week, six hours per day - a total of 120 hours of classroom instruction.

Course Offerings
The program includes four units of SDSU resident credit. Students can request approval to take one to three additional units (maximum of seven units total) at a per unit cost. Students needing a class other than those listed or needing additional units should discuss the matter with program faculty. On average, 12 Spanish courses will be available. The course offerings are listed on the program application.

Included and Optional Activities
There will be local events included in the program fee to some of the events that occur in Cuernavaca. UNINTER staff will also organize activities for all international students at additional modest prices. These optional activities are great opportunities to see Teotihuacan, Taxco, Acapulco, Folkloric Ballet in Mexico City, films, theatres, and fiestas. Optional classes in Mexican dancing, folkloric dancing, salsa dancing, cooking, and art are available for a small fee. The UNINTER staff will help you plan and take part in these or other trips and activities.

Amigo Program
An optional program supplementing the academic program at UNINTER. The purpose is to promote linguistic and intercultural exchange between national and international students. Through workshops and group activities, students will have the opportunity to spend time with students from other countries to exchange language skills, culture, customs, traditions, hobbies, and interests.

Host Families
You will live with a Spanish-speaking host family or individual during this program. UNINTER selects all host families and makes all placement arrangements. The experience and living arrangements may vary considerably from family to family. It is likely that there will be other students in the apartment and that you will share a double bedroom. Three meals per day and transportation to and from school are provided. The Institute is responsible for assigning participants, assisting with the "settling-in" process and for resolving any situations that may arise. With effort and cultural sensitivity, you will soon find yourself feeling "right at home" and both learning more about cultural values of your new family, and teaching them about yours.

Airfare
Each student is responsible for making his/her own travel arrangements as airfare is not included in the program price. Please see our additional information page for STA Travel's discounted student airfare information. Participates are highly encouraged to purchase their airfare at the STA Travel office on the SDSU campus because of their ability to offer flexible low-cost airline tickets with nominal cancellation or date change fees. SDSU's College of Extended Studies does not take responsibility for any transportation cancellation fees due to program cancellation.

Included in the Fee

  • Enrollment at SDSU in four units
  • Tuition costs at the Center for Bilingual Multicultural Studies (including orientation, 90 hours of instruction, academic reports, and administrative services)
  • Host family accommodations with 3 meals daily and weekly laundry service

Not included in the Fee
