FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Professional Development?
Professional Development, a division of SDSU’s College of Extended Studies, is dedicated to meeting the training and development needs of San Diego’s business community. Through seminars, workshops, and certificate programs on the most crucial issues facing business today, Professional Development helps companies organize, operate, and manage their businesses more efficiently. Drawing on the expertise of practicing professionals, experienced trainers, and SDSU faculty, Professional Development helps organizations compete in tomorrow’s marketplace through education and training today.

Why are different fees quoted for most seminars?
The public rate is the standard rate for each program. The Preferred Partner rate reflects the savings for employees of member companies who typically send many employees to our programs. The courses that offer reduced fees for members are clearly identified in our catalog and on our web site at www.neverstoplearning.net.

What is the Professional Development membership program?
The Preferred Partner program rewards organizations that support training and development within their companies. A member company can register as many employees as it wants in as many courses as it needs and receive a significant savings for all courses that qualify. Other benefits include previews of selected programs, invitations to special events, public recognition, and participation in the development of educational offerings.

Please contact Tamara McLeod, Executive Director, at (619) 594-5640 or tmcleod@mail.sdsu.edu to find out how your organization can benefit through our Preferred Partner program.

How do I register?
It’s easy! Register by phone, online, fax, or mail. Payment can be made by credit card, personal check, or company purchase order. Confirmation of your enrollment will be mailed or faxed.

My company has its own training department. Where does Professional Development fit in?
Many companies use SDSU Professional Development as an extension of their own training department and for specialized training not currently available to their employees. Some small companies rely on Professional Development to meet all their training needs. In addition, individuals select those courses which best fit their personal career enhancement goals. Our courses are taught by practicing professionals, with years of experience in their fields, and offer up-to-date presentations of the latest trends and skills.

Do you offer customized training?
Absolutely! Customized training to meet a company's specific educational and employee development needs is always available. Choose from any of our regular programs or let us work with you to design a customized program aligned with your business goals. Please.

Do you online training?
Absolutely! Professional Development online courses offer a convenient alternative to on-site classes.

Can I enroll in a seminar on my own?
Many employees take charge of their own career growth and development by enrolling in our courses directly. (Be sure to ask your employer about its tuition reimbursement program.) Other participants have been selected by their companies for specialized training not currently offered by their own training departments.

Where are the seminars held? Where do I park?
Most Professional Development seminars are held at SDSU Extended Studies/Gateway Centers, which is located on the edge of the SDSU campus. Ample free parking is provided in an adjacent parking structure. A parking permit with directions to the SDSU Gateway Center will be sent with your confirmation of enrollment.

Do you offer career training?
Professional Development also offers certificate programs in more than 25 career areas for professionals seeking expertise and improved standing within their fields. For information on these or other certificate programs call us at (619) 594-6255, or visit our web site at www.ces.sdsu.edu/bachelordegrees.html.

How do I earn continuing education units?
For a small additional fee, SDSU’s College of Extended Studies awards continuing education units (CEUs). Please call the Professional Development office for more details at (619) 594-5640.

What kinds of courses do you offer?
Professional Development focuses its training in the areas of management and leadership, and continuous process and quality improvement.
