Lean Six Sigma Certification
Frequently Asked Questions: << Back to program description

What is the difference between getting a certificate and becoming certified?
Most universities will provide you with a certificate of completion once you have attended all their required classes. The SDSU Lean Six Sigma Certification holds much more value. Our certification process is leading the industry standard, requiring a completed project demonstrating the correct use of lean and six sigma tools as well as a financial benefit to your company.

What does the project requirement entail?
Typically, projects take between four and six months to complete. They are done either at the organization where you are currently employed, or at an organization that is sponsoring your project. You will learn tools and techniques to define, measure, analyze, implement, and control the steps in your work process. Each stage will be reported in your project, where you will document the correct use of lean and six sigma tools as well as a financial benefit to your company. Our lead instructor will work with you to select a suitable project that will generate the highest return, and will mentor you throughout your project.

Do I have to be working full time and be sponsored by my company in order to attend?
Many of our students are working full time, and are applying the tools they learn each week to their work processes immediately. Other students are not employed full time and are working as interns in order to complete a project. The benefit to a sponsoring organization is having a project completed with cost savings. The benefit to the student is to gain real experience designing and implementing a project, which could greatly increase their employment opportunities.

What if I need an organization to do a project with?
We have students who have approached organizations and offered to do a complete project free of charge in return for the experience of finishing a project. There is a real benefit to the sponsoring organization, as they will have a project completed with a financial benefit to their company, without having to pay for the expertise.

Are these credit courses?
Continuing education units (CEUs) are available for a small additional fee. The classes are not transferable for degree credit.

The course does not begin for several weeks; do I need to enroll now?
Yes, we encourage you to enroll early in order to reserve your seat in the course, and to ensure we have time to order your course materials. We often offer incentives for registering early. Check with us for more details.

It sounds great, but I don't want to lose a lot of time or money sending several of my staff to your program. Do you offer off-site training?
You have a choice of where you would like your training to take place, either at our location or yours. You can schedule training at your convenience and gain the benefits of our exceptional training expertise at your corporate site. We can also customize a program to meet your specific needs and organizational objectives.
