study at San Diego State University’s College of Extended Studies.

If you can demonstrate your keen interest and your academic skills, we’re
interested in enrolling you in the 2009 Japan Studies Academy for Gifted Youth. We’re
looking for high school students with a GPA of 3.0 or above, but you don’t need any
previous knowledge of Japanese language or culture.
We’ve designed this three-week academy to be the closest you can get
to cultural immersion without buying a plane ticket.
You will tackle one of the following college-level language
programs:
- Section I is open to students with absolutely no background in Japanese.
- Section II is geared toward students taking Japanese in high school.
- Section III is designed for students who speak Japanese with their families
You’ll attend interesting seminars, lectures, readings, films, and discussion groups,
workshops, and cultural activities related to Japanese history, culture, literature, religion,
foreign policy, business, language, and education. Sounds like a lot? It’s total immersion!
Our exploration together will be broad and comprehensive. We’ll focus on all kinds
of different topics – anime and pop culture, modernization, regional relations, wartime
Japan, Japanese Americans in the U.S., art and architecture, Buddhism and Japanese life,
business etiquette, Koto and Shakuhachi music, Taiko drums, origami, calligraphy, flower
arrangement, and more…
For more information about the program, please contact Professor Yoshiko Higurashi, who
is the director of the Japanese Language Program at San Diego State University’s Department
of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages. She can be reached by email at yhigurashi@mail.sdsu.edu
or by phone at (619) 594-1005 (direct line) or (619) 594-5268 (the department).
