Certificate ProgramHow to: Supervision Basics

Learn the basic skills and knowledge every supervisor and manager needs to tackle the complex challenges in today’s workplace. An experienced instructor team will provide real-life examples and scenarios based on their experiences, and you’ll be able to use what you learn on the job right away. Take one course or earn a certificate by taking the entire series.

Location of Classes
SDSU Extended Studies/Gateway Centers, corner of Campanile Drive and Hardy Avenue.

No courses offered during summer in this program. Fall 2008 course information will be available August 1.

Fall 2008 Courses

How to Become an Effective Leader
In this session, key leadership concepts and skills are introduced and explored using experiential and group exercises. Participants will also learn about their own leadership preferences and how to develop an effective leadership style.

How to Interview and Select the Best Employees
Learn new recruitment and selection strategies and how to fill vacant jobs in a timely and successful manner. Also learn how to identify the behavioral characteristics to focus on in the interview, while developing your skills as an effective interviewer.

How to Understand Employment Law
Learn about the laws that impact the employment relationship. Emphasis is placed on leave of absence laws, disability accommodation, discrimination, wage and hour issues, and where to find assistance with other complex issues.

How to Listen and Communicate Effectively
Learn strategies for effective communication and dealing with difficult people. Discover effective ways to organize and communicate in staff meetings and one-on-one with employees. Understand key methods of resolving difficult situations through coaching and problem-solving techniques.

How to Manage Employee Performance
Learn how to develop criteria and performance standards to measure an employee's work, how to deal with conflict situations, and how to avoid violence in the workplace. You'll learn how to conduct an effective performance evaluation conference (even with a poor performer) and practice conducting conferences.
How to Keep Employees Safe
Discover the legal and ethical responsibilities of a supervisor and the business benefits of providing a safe working environment.

How to Train Employees on the Job
Learn about the different ways employees learn and the variety of training techniques you can use, how to develop an employee training plan, and how to create and use job aids to improve employee performance.

How to Motivate Employees
Learn the how and why of current pay practices behind your own organization's compensation policies. Identify strategies for increasing the motivational spirit of your work team, including financial and non-financial ideas for recognizing your team members.

How to Manage Multiple Priorities
Learn how to balance the many priorities you are faced with every day at work. This session will provide the tools for taking control of your tasks and deadlines; managing time more effectively by learning to prioritize; and earning respect by remaining calm even during the most stressful times. You will develop a plan of action to become more productive and satisfied in all areas of your life.

The College of Extended Studies is a State-approved provider
for the Federal Workforce Investment Act for this program.


Certificate ProgramBeyond the Basics: Management in Action

This series of workshops addresses the critical skills that you need to be a successful manager or supervisor in today's complex organizational climates. You will learn valuable management concepts which enhance your own unique talents and contributions. This interactive series incorporates short facilitated discussions, group activities, real-world case studies, videos, and various learning assessments. You will develop action plans to enhance your learning and have ample time to network and share your experiences with other participants.

Location of Classes
SDSU Extended Studies/Gateway Centers, Hardy Avenue entrance. Courses take place from 8:30 am-12 pm.

No courses offered during summer in this program. Fall 2008 course information will be available August 1.

SDSU Research Foundation Program

Fall 2008 Courses

Session 1: Developing Your Leadership Potential
This session will explore the competencies and practices of exemplary leaders and how to create a culture of committed employees. The immediate supervisor is key to motivating and retaining employees. Participants will complete a leadership practices self-assessment and identify areas of strengths and areas to develop.

Session 2: Enhancing Interpersonal Communication
This session will review the communication practices to develop trust and manage conflict in the workplace. Participants will have an opportunity to enhance their core communication skills of listening and giving feedback. The topics of communicating with diverse groups and generations will also be explored.

Session 3: Coaching for High Performance
This session will cover the important role of leaders in managing employee performance. Participants will examine the practices for retaining top talent and the importance of training and development, and learn how to set clear goals and expectations. There will be opportunities to practice coaching and mentoring skills.
Session 4: Guiding Through Change
This session will provide participants strategies to effectively manage change. They will understand how to manage a change initiative from both a process and people approach. Key topics will include how people react to change, dealing with resistance to change and the importance of communication.

Session 5: Building Successful Teams
This session will explore the practices for creating effective project teams, cross functional teams, and permanent department work groups. Participants will apply the key elements of high performance and a team model to their own existing groups. Strategies for facilitating team dynamics will be practiced.

Session 6: Problem-solving and Decision-making
This session will present approaches and tools for effective problem-solving. The importance of using a problem-solving model for problem definition and cause analysis will be stressed and practiced. Participants will apply this model to a problem from their workplace. Additionally, tools for effective individual and team decision-making will be provided.
