The Department of Linguistics and Asian/Middle Eastern Languages offers a basic and an advanced Certificate in Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL). The basic certificate requires 15 units including Linguistics 420 or 520, 452 or 552, 524 or 551, 530 or 555, and 550. Under certain circumstances comparable courses taken at other institutions may count toward the certificate. Such courses must be evaluated and approved by the certificate advisor. In addition, there is a 15-hour tutoring practicum requirement.

Bilingual individuals in the 21st century face a unique challenge as well as unprecedented opportunities for advancement in a fast-growing profession with high demand - translation and court interpreting. San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus proudly announces its certificate program in these two competencies.

Study Day or Night with Convenient Six-week Online Noncredit Courses
Update your skills and discover a new talent, or chart a career path at your own pace and at your own convenience with our noncredit, instructor-led, online courses. Each course runs for six weeks and consists of 12 lessons. The lessons are supplemented by interactive quizzes, assignments, tutorials, and online discussion areas. All materials will be available to you over the Internet. Read your lessons and ask questions of your instructor at times that are most convenient to you.
All you need to get started is Internet access, an email address, and a web browser. Please visit www.ed2go.com/cessdsu for requirements, demonstrations, and additional information. Pre-registration is required for these classes to allow students to participate in the online orientation.

| Accelerated Elementary Latin |
Intensive introduction to ancient Latin, emphasizing basic grammar, vocabulary, and syntax. Preparation for Classics 303L. Not open to students who have completed four years of high school Latin unless the fourth course was completed five or more years ago. Not open to students with credit in Classics 101L and 202L.
