Certificate Program Open University Certificate in Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL)

The Department of Linguistics offers a basic and an advanced Certificate in Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL). The basic certificate requires 15 units to include Linguistics 420 or 520, 452 or 552, 524 or 551, 530 or 555, and 550. Under certain circumstances comparable courses taken at other institutions may count toward the certificate. Such courses must be evaluated and approved by the certificate advisor. In addition, there is a 15-hour tutoring practicum requirement.

Certificate ProgramOpen University Certificate in Translation and Court Interpreting (English-Spanish)

Bilingual individuals in the 21st century face a unique challenge as well as unprecedented opportunities for advancement in a fast-growing profession with high demand - translation and court interpreting. San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Campus proudly announces its certificate program in these two competencies.

A $35 application processing fee is required.

Online CourseStudy Day or Night with Convenient Six-week Online Courses

Update your skills and discover a new talent, or chart a career path at your own pace and at your own convenience with our noncredit, instructor-led, online courses. Each course runs for six weeks and consists of 12 lessons. The lessons are supplemented by interactive quizzes, assignments, tutorials, and online discussion areas. All materials will be available to you over the Internet. Read your lessons and ask questions of your instructor at times that are most convenient to you.

All you need to get started is Internet access, an email address, and a web browser. Please visit www.ed2go.com/cessdsu for requirements, demonstrations, and additional information. Pre-registration is required for these classes to allow students to participate in the online orientation.


Summer 2008 Courses

New course Offering Essential Conversational Spanish for Beginners
Want to converse comfortably in Spanish? The focus of this course will get you on your way. Basic grammar will be covered and practiced in conversation. You will learn the language in a relaxed, lively environment. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.

Instructor: Yadirah Lagomarsini is a native Spanish speaker and experienced language instructor who enjoys teaching Spanish in a relaxed, pleasant environment.

Italian for Conversation
Bring your stories and/or photographs of Italy, and let's talk! Students will gain knowledge of many cultural aspects of Italy while they review grammar and conversational basics in a relaxed, fun atmosphere.
