As today's media industries continue to transform at warp speed, many media professionals find themselves navigating Web-based publishing methods for which they have not been fully trained.<br />

This certificate program is designed for professionals who would like to hone their skills in how to use multimedia tools and how to harness the interactive power of the Internet to build an audience. Participants will receive training in how to build their own web presence, including a web site, a blog, an audio slideshow, and a video; as well as develop skills in social networking and search engine optimization.
Participants will work in both classroom and lab settings and will be expected to provide a digital still camera, earbuds, flash drive, and a free Google Gmail account. Students attending any video class will be required to pay a one-time additional fee of $150 to cover a hard drive, batteries, tapes, etc. to ensure you can take your work with you. Additional equipment and software will be provided for use during certain class sessions.<br />

<strong>Who Should Attend</strong><br />
This certificate program is targeted to working professionals within the fields of journalism, public relations, advertising, and multimedia content production. A minimum of three to five years of professional experience in a media field is recommended.<br />

<strong>The Certificate</strong><br />
The Professional Certificate in Digital Media requires five courses for certificate completion.<br />
<br />
Core courses: <em>Publishing on the Web, Audio and Slideshow Production, Video Production for the Web I,</em> and <em>Video Production for the Web II.</em><br />

Elective courses: <em>Advanced Social Networking Tools</em> and <em>Search Engine Optimization (SEO).<br />

Course Descriptions
Publishing on the Web
An introduction to Web 2.0 publishing tools and principles. Class covers how to set up a web presence, how to blog and post regular content on the web, and how to integrate and utilize the web's many free or low-cost applications. Class also introduces Google Apps and social networking sites like Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn to increase web site traffic and revenue and to ensure site loyalty, all of which are examined in more depth in Advanced Social Networking Tools. Other topics covered include web branding, online collaboration, online ethics and etiquette, beginning web analytics and search engine optimization, and mobile integration.

Audio and Slideshow Production
Participants will learn tips for creating professional-looking digital photographs. Students will piece together photos and compelling narratives that can be easily uploaded to the Web. In this hands-on course, participants will learn how to use use free programs such as Audacity, iMovie and Windows Movie Maker to create audio slideshows that will be ready for a website or blog. <em>Please bring a digital camera to the first class meeting.</em>

Advanced Social Networking Tools
In-depth study of Web-based social-networking tools. Class takes a more in-depth look at Google Apps, as well as popular social networking tools such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, Skype, and YouTube as media professionals' tools. Class explores managing online applications and social networks and continues to expand on web branding. Other topics covered include social bookmarking, mobile integration and introduces participants to Second Life, an online space in which people create avatars to represent themselves in a virtual world.

Video Production for the Web I
Learn how to produce professional-looking videos with consumer-grade equipment and software. This course covers the basic principles of shooting and editing. Students will learn how to create their own YouTube channel using Flip cams (provided) and iMovie or Movie Maker, depending on their preferred software platform. Participants will be shown how to host and upload their videos to a blog or Web site.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Exploring the fundamentals of search engine optimization. Class covers how to structure web sites, news or feature content, ads, and headlines to maximize their exposure to various audiences. Class also covers how to use various assessment tools, such as RSS feeds, to measure and improve search results.

Video Production for the Web II
This class teaches advanced shooting and editing techniques and utilizes professional-grade equipment and software. Students will shoot broadcast-style packages with Sony HD video cameras and edit using Final Cut Express. Editing software compatible with PC’s also will be demonstrated.
