As today's media industries continue to transform at warp speed, many media professionals find themselves navigating Web-based publishing methods for which they have not been fully trained.<br /><br />
This certificate program is designed for professionals who would like to hone their skills in how to use multimedia tools and how to harness the interactive power of the Internet to build an audience. Participants will receive training in how to build their own web presence, including a web site, a blog, an audio slideshow, and a video; as well as develop skills in social networking and search engine optimization.
<strong>Certificate Information</strong><br />
Participants will work in computer lab settings and will be expected to have a digital still camera, flash drive, and free Google Gmail account. Additional equipment and software will be provided for use during certain class sessions.<br /><br />
<strong>Who Should Attend</strong><br />
This certificate program is targeted to working professionals within the fields of journalism, public relations, advertising, and multimedia content production. A minimum of three to five years of professional experience in a media field is recommended.<br /><br />
<strong>The Certificate</strong><br />
The <strong>Professional Certificate in Digital and Social Media</strong> requires six courses for certificate completion. Take any six of the following nine courses: <em>Publishing on the Web, Photography in the Digital Age I and II, Beginning Social Media, Advanced Social Media, Video Production for the Web I and II</em>, and <em>Increasing Traffic to Your Website I </em>and <em>II</em>.<br /><br />
<strong>Note:</strong> <em>Video I should be taken prior to Video II</em>.<br /><br />

Course Descriptions
DM 0001 Publishing on the Web
<strong><em>An introduction to web publishing tools.</em></strong> Review the basics of publishing your content on the Internet. You’ll learn how to set up a web presence, how to blog and how to post regular content on the web. You’ll also learn how and when to use the web’s many free or low-cost applications to increase website traffic and ensure site loyalty.

DM 0004 Video Production for the Web I
<strong><em>An introduction to online video production.</em></strong> Learn how to produce videos with consumer-grade equipment and software. This course covers the basic principles of shooting and editing. Students will learn how to create their own YouTube channel using Flip cams (provided) and iMovie or Movie Maker, depending on their preferred software platform. Participants will be shown how to host and upload their videos to a blog or web site.

DM 0005 Increasing Traffic to Your Website
Exploring the fundamentals of search engine optimization (SEO). Class covers how to structure websites for SEO and write news or feature content, ads, and headlines to maximize their exposure to various audiences. Class also covers how to use various assessment tools, such as RSS feeds, to measure and improve search results. Working knowledge of Excel recommended.

DM 0006 Video Production for the Web II
<strong><em>Advanced online video production.</em></strong> This class teaches advanced shooting and editing techniques and utilizes professional-grade equipment and software. Students will shoot broadcast-style packages with Sony HD video cameras and edit using Final Cut Express. Editing software compatible with PCs will also be demonstrated.

DM 0010 Beginning Social Media
<strong><em>Introduction to web-based social media tools.</strong></em> Get a broad overview of applications such as Google apps, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, Skype, and YouTube as media professionals’ tools. Class explores managing online applications and social networks and web branding.

DM 0011 Advanced Social Media
<strong><em>An in-depth study of social media tools.</em></strong> Learn how the most popular applications in the social media arena can be used to accomplish marketing goals and build awareness for your organization. Enhance your basic profiles on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Foursquare to give them a polished professional appearance that’s in line with your branding.

DM 0012 Photography in the Digital Age I
Basics of using digital cameras and editing software to create compelling photographic work. Using Adobe Photoshop Elements, this course covers the basics of toning, cropping and saving photos for the Web. Students also will participate in thoughtful discussions and receive constructive critiques on their photography. (This updated course replaces Photo Editing with Photoshop).

DM 0013 Photography in the Digital Age II
Practical techniques to turn imagery into a cohesive story or marketing package for the web. Using iMovie, Photoshop Elements and Web-based slideshow presentations, participants will learn the basics for preparing images for online consumption. Students will create photo packages that include an audio slideshow and other web presentations. Photography in the Digital Age I, or experience with Photoshop, is highly recommended. (This updated course replaces Audio and Slideshow Production.)

DM 0014 Increasing Traffic to Your Website II
Explores applications of search engine optimization (SEO), based on the foundational skills gained in "Increasing Traffic to Your Website I." Course provides further insight into analyzing your SEO results. Completion of Increasing Traffic to Your Website I or instructor approval is required.
