Thank you for your interest in conducting a study abroad program through the College of Extended Studies (CES). Study abroad programs conducted through CES are self-support short-term programs designed for groups of 15 to 25. In conjunction with campus departments, faculty, and University authorized International Education Organizations (IEOs), CES provides access to high quality study abroad programs to help meet student needs for international and global knowledge, skills, and abilities.
As SDSU continues to expand international education opportunities, CES is actively working on simplifying the study abroad program development process for faculty, departments, and colleges. To that end, we are adding, on a trial basis, a new approach to study abroad programs conducted through CES – an approach that will enable faculty to focus on the academic portions of the experience and CES to focus on the administrative and logistical portions of the study abroad experience.
New Program Components
- SDSU Approved International Education Organization (IEOs)
- Service providers will be screened for approval based on the breadth and depth of services, the variety of locations served, and their agreement to operate in accordance with SDSU and CSU policies.
- The use of IEOs eliminates the need for faculty to be involved with a wide range of administrative and logistical challenges.
- Programs conducted through CES that use IEOs will initially be offered beginning in Summer 2013 during two sessions each summer and one session during winter and spring breaks.
- Needs Assessment
- Beginning with study abroad program proposals for Summer 2013, CES will provide personnel to assist with the design, development, implementation, and analysis of a program needs assessment.
- Time Frames for Success
- To be successful, study abroad programs need to accomplish such tasks as:
- A thorough needs assessment
- Program proposal application
- IEO program development
- Budget development
- Creation and distribution of marketing and recruiting materials
- Recruiting students
- Enrolling a large enough number of students for the program to be successful.
- It is therefore necessary for proposals to be finalized far enough in advance to accomplish all of these goals.
