College Offers Numerous Fitness-Related Certificates

SAN DIEGO, Monday, November 19, 2007 - Overall employment for fitness workers is expected to increase 30 percent in San Diego County through 2014.

That means more opportunities for managing fitness facilities.

You can prepare for your next step by completing individual courses or earning a personal fitness certificate online through San Diego State University's College of Extended Studies (CES). Courses are offered through online Professional Certificate programs in Fitness Management, Personal Fitness Training, Personal Training for Older Adults, Women's Exercise Training and Wellness.

The face-to-face (f2f) Professional Certificate in Fitness Management program is the result of a collaboration between SDSU-CES, industry experts, internship affiliates, an expert board of advisors, and national fitness organizations. It's an interactive, comprehensive, web-based program designed to be "one-of-a-kind" that teaches you how to manage a personal training program and/or fitness department as a strategic business unit.

There are four required courses with 30 f2f classroom contact hours each. Courses are five weeks in length and there is an optional elective internship course that is 60 hours. The certificate program is offered in the fall, spring, and summer.

The Professional Certificate in Personal Fitness Training is a five-month online program that provides essential education integrating exercise science curriculum, practical training techniques, and a field internship experience. This program is designed for fitness professionals from all fields including allied health professionals, physical therapists, chiropractors, physicians, wellness consultants, physical education teachers, nutritionists, and individuals seeking a new career as a fitness professional.

In the Personal Fitness Certification program, you will learn how to apply your client's health history, goals, and abilities into a systematic model that enables your clients to progress through appropriate training levels and phases.

The Online Professional Certificate in Personal Training for Older Adults is a new program with an optional field internship elective course that allows you to fit courses into your busy schedule, go online anytime, and complete the certificate within three months. Content and curriculum within each course are designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to implement a safe and effective fitness model for older clients.

The new Online Professional Certificate in Women's Exercise Training and Wellness program offers the same 24/7 advantages as the personal training for older adults certificate curriculum. It is designed to prepare graduating students for a career working with women of all ages at medically-based fitness facilities, community wellness programs, personal training studios, physical therapy clinics, health promotion sites, and private and commercial health clubs.
