College Offers Professional Certificate in Marketing and Media

SAN DIEGO, Thursday, August 16, 2007 - The importance of sales and marketing cannot be overlooked since those departments have the potential to financially make or break a company. If your company does not get the word out in a positive manner, the results may be disastrous.

To meet the needs of spreading the word in today's workforce, San Diego State University's College of Extended Studies offers a Professional Certificate in Marketing and Media Specialist program.

As a student, you will learn everything you need to know to quickly enhance your career and earning capacity in the sales and marketing fields. Past students have found this program to be especially rewarding due to the real-life, eye-opening approach of the instructors, with each providing real-world, ready-to-use definitions, examples, and advice relative to the business of mass communication and sales.

Practical information you'll understand and use everyday is stressed. This comprehensive program is provided through a partnership between SDSU's College of Extended Studies and the San Diego Ad Club.

Fall courses include:

The Marketing Plan: This course teaches you a common sense, simple-to-understand marketing, advertising, and sales planning system you'll find yourself using over and over again. It travels all the roads you need to take as a marketing and media specialist. Key topics include: defining marketing, the marketing planning system, the value of research and knowledge, the business profile, determining objectives, creating strategies, developing budgets, and measuring results.

Creativity and the Media: What's creative? Now you'll know, thanks to the systematic approach to the creative process presented in this course. Plus, you'll learn how to create the most effective messaging in each medium. The instructor will involve you with real, meaningful, up-to-the-moment case studies that clearly illuminate what creative/effective advertising is all about.

Introduction to the Operation of Media Companies: Without an audience, media companies have nothing to offer their advertisers. Without advertisers, media companies have no revenue. How media companies meet the needs of their two publics is the focus of this introductory class. You will examine the structure and best practices of media such as television, newspapers, Internet, magazines, and radio. How do they operate today? How are they preparing for the future? These questions will be answered.

To earn a career-enhancing Marketing and Media Specialist Certificate, you must pass six courses: The Marketing Plan, Creativity and Media, Introduction to the Operation of Media Companies, Media Planning and Buying, Media Sales and Promotion, and The Marketing and Advertising Campaign.
