Redwine Teaches Wine Course at SDSU Extended Studies
SAN DIEGO, Wednesday, August 15, 2007 - When Lisa Klenke met a man named David on a blind
date 10 years ago, she didn't even know his last name.
About a month later, Lisa inquired and was told that David's given name is Redwine.
"I told him I wanted to see his ID," Lisa said. "I couldn't believe someone
had that last name."
What has made it even more poetic is that Lisa and David Redwine have been married for
the past five years.
Redwine is an appropriate last name for Lisa, who will be teaching an Exploring Wine
class Mondays, Sept. 10-Oct. 8, 6-9 pm in the Professional Certificate in the Business of
Wine program through SDSU's College of Extended Studies.
Quite appropriately, Redwine is the wine director at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina
as well as the sommelier and general manager at Molly's Restaurant and Bar inside the hotel.
Not surprisingly, people often give her a second look when they see her name badge while
she is on the floor at Molly's.
"Every night, one or two people ask me if that is really my last name," she said.
"It opens the door for me to get to know guests. The next thing I know, we're talking
about where they are from and what they like to drink."
The Business of Wine Professional Certificate prepares participants with the knowledge
and skills necessary to achieve success in many wine-related occupations. Most classes are
held off-site at restaurants and wineries.
Those who should attend include: restaurant managers, owners, entrepreneurs, winery employees,
event planners, bartenders, bar managers, distribution and retail sales employees, wine
enthusiasts, and anyone interested in moving into hospitality careers. You must be 21 years
of age to register for this program.
After Redwine's class concludes, other fall courses in the certificate program include
Wine Business Strategies (Tuesdays, Sept. 25-Oct. 16, 6-9 pm), Wine Making Behind
the Scenes (Saturday, Oct. 13, 8 am-4:30 pm), and Red, White and Champagne (Mondays,
Oct. 22-Nov. 12).
"The whole program is great for people considering a second career," Redwine
said. "It gives a realistic idea of what working in the wine industry is all about.
If you have a passion for wine, this program will ignite it."
