CES Highlights Health Programs for All Ages
SAN DIEGO, Wednesday, June 29, 2005 - A Gerontology Certificate
is among the San Diego State University programs that are open to
the public through the College of Extended Studies Open University.
The Open University program allows individuals to enroll in courses,
space permitting, without being formally admitted to the university.
Participants can take classes to finish a degree, for career advancement,
or for personal enrichment. Certain restrictions apply and our friendly
and courteous educational counselors will be happy to discuss details
with you via phone or email.
This program enables working adults and high school students the
opportunity to enroll in SDSU's classes without the requirements
of university application and admittance. On a space-available basis,
Open University students can earn credit toward a degree, update
their professional skills, or investigate a new career. Employers
have found it helpful to send employees to selected work-related
courses to enhance their on-the-job productivity.
Students can apply up to 24 units of Open University credit.
The Certificate Program in Gerontology is designed for people working
in the field of aging, as well as those interested in entering the
field. Completion of the certificate program enables participants
to assume greater responsibility in this specialty.
In addition to this certificate program, the College of Extended
Studies offers many other classes that will help you remain healthy
through its Exercise and Nutritional Science (ENS) department, as
well as the Mission Bay Aquatic Center Water Sports Instruction
program.
The Biomechanics of Human Movement course through ENS provides
mechanical principles as applied to movement, analysis, and application
to selected motor skills.
Courses offered in the Mission Bay Aquatic Center program include:
Basic Sailing: This class introduces sailing in a simple
single-handed boat, the Sabot.
Beginning Windsurfing (Level 1): A combination of land-based
instruction and on-the-water coaching are used to properly prepare
the student.
Basic Sea Kayaking: The fundamentals of kayaking are taught
in the stable sea kayak, noted for its touring capabilities.
Basic Rowing (Sculling): This course introduces the novice
rower to sculling through the use of wherries and single shells.
Beginning Surfing: Class sessions include lectures on the
mechanics of beach and waves, board handling, paddling through the
surf, and the skills needed to stand and ride a wave. Water safety
and ocean awareness are stressed.
Multi-level Waterskiing: Instruction is geared to the beginner
who has never skied as well as the intermediate or advanced skier.
SDSU's College of Extended Studies offers a wide variety of lifelong
learning classes, seminars, and certificate programs. Career advancement
courses are offered in many areas of management, leadership, and
quality improvement while self-enrichment courses range from astronomy
to web design. Additionally, the College offers over 30 certificate
programs, online courses, and many other learning opportunities.
