College Offers New Certificate Program in
Effectively Teaching African American Students
SAN DIEGO, Wednesday, January 19, 2005 - The San Diego Association
of African American Educators (AAAE), in conjunction with San Diego
State University's College of Education, is offering a new certificate
program in Effectively Teaching African American Students, beginning
Feb. 4.
This 12-unit program offered through SDSU's College of Extended
Studies is designed to help teachers effectively teach African American
students by giving them the tools to meet the unique needs of students.
The curriculum integrates research on what works in urban low achieving
classrooms with customized strategies for teachers to use in the
classroom.
The program consists of both classroom and field project courses
and mixes theory with practical hands-on applications. Instructors
who teach the courses are professional educators who demonstrate
expertise in their respective fields and have been approved by SDSU's
College of Education.
Units earned from the courses are designed to:
- meet the needs of educators who wish to develop or continue
the study of a current topic
- apply toward the completion of 150 clock hours for credential
renewal
Teachers must consult their district office for approvals prior
to enrolling in the program.
