College Hosts Nine Saturday Seminars on Feb. 7

SAN DIEGO, Wednesday Jan. 21, 2004 - Are you unable to get away during the week to further your education?

Then the professional development Saturday Seminars offered by San Diego State University's College of Extended Studies on Feb. 7 could provide the answer.

The eight half-day programs and one full-day course help to improve your business skills in specific areas of management, leadership, and supervision. Participants may enroll in one or two half-day seminars or one full-day program and learn practical, innovative techniques to apply on Monday.

Half-day seminars from 8:30 a.m.-noon include:

Interpersonal Skills for Successful Leaders: Effective interpersonal skills are a must for today's leaders. This workshop will help facilitate interpersonal strengths and identify areas of challenge. You will learn techniques for effectively working with people whose values, styles, and ability to listen are different or dissimilar.

Managerial Ethics and Organizational Responsibility: Understanding ethical approaches helps managers build a solid foundation on which to base future decision-making. A basic understanding of the role ethics play in shaping an organization's future are covered through videos, self-assessment, group discussions, and a final case study.

Creating Collaboration: There is an art to creating collaboration and it can be learned. Human nature is a paradox; we desire both autonomy and connection. Learning how to properly satisfy these seemingly opposing needs both for you and for others is the art of creating collaboration. This experiential program will take you on a journey of understanding and skill.

Career and Life Planning for Today's Professional: What is your life path? Where are you supposed to be? Are you there right now? If not, how do you get there? Come discover how to become a change master by learning about life and career management strategies. Don't stop until you get where you want to be! Topics include change and time management, ways to avoid procrastination, short-term/long-term goal setting, and action planning.

Half-day seminars from 1-4:30 p.m. are:

Administrative Skills for Successful Leaders: To succeed in today's fast-paced, changing environments, you need systems and methods in place that allow you to control your workday. This workshop focuses on helping you get control of your workload so you will be able to find the time to spend on people development and team building.

Creativity Ignited: This imaginative workshop will inspire participants to understand and engage in their own creative process and feel more confident with their innovation and ingenuity. Through presentations, discussions, and interactive exercises, trainees will learn to recognize their inherent creative resourcefulness and look at new ways of approaching everyday challenges.

Practical Handling of HR Legal Issues: The knowledge of legal theory is comforting, but how do you manage the day-to-day issues that arise and have legal implications or constraints? The focus of this seminar is on contemporary, realistic issues that supervisors, managers, and human resources staff must resolve with employees.

Peer to Supervisor: Making the advancement to supervisor requires skill, pre-planning, and critical thinking. This seminar is designed to prepare you with the approaches for using your current position to gain valuable experience. You will examine the differences between performing as an individual contributor and supervising the work of others. You will also learn strategies for success when newly promoted.

The all-day seminar from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. is:

Breakthrough Leadership: How to Organize the Daily Stampede and Architect a Breakthrough Journey: Orient yourself as a breakthrough leader by assembling your existing skills in an integrated, journey-oriented framework. In this workshop, we will apply systems thinking to a dynamic strategic process and understand what it takes to undertake a breakthrough journey. As a result of attending this workshop, you will be more equipped as a breakthrough leader.
