College Offers Bachelor's Degree in Public
Administration
SAN DIEGO, Wednesday Jan. 14, 2004 - A Bachelor's Degree of Applied
Arts in Public Administration may lead to great things for those
seeking a position in the field. San Diego State University's College
of Extended Studies offers individuals the opportunity to receive
such a degree through intensive 6- to 10-week sessions offered year-round
through evening and weekend courses. An accelerated program can
be completed in as little as two years, and financial aid is available.
Lou Rea, Ph.D., director of SDSU's School of Public Administration
and Urban Studies notes: "The working adult degree program
in public administration offered by the College of Extended Studies
is one of the most successful community outreach programs I've been
involved with in more than 25 years of teaching at SDSU. It is an
excellent example of the College providing a program that fits the
needs of working adults in San Diego."
The following classes are part of the degree program in public
administration:
A class on Concepts and Issues in Public Administration
involves theory and practice of governmental administration in differing
environments, role of administrators, issues facing administrators
and techniques of administration.
The course on Introduction to Urban Planning covers regional,
county, and city consideration of the master plan including its
purposes, contents and method of adoption. Methods of Analysis
in City Planning focuses on methods of primary data collection
and analysis of secondary data sources for problem solving in city
planning, as well as techniques associated with urban design and
urban development.
A course titled The Urban Scene entails key issues in public
administration, criminal justice administration and city planning.
It also emphasizes government structure and public decision-making
processes, organizational behavior, effectiveness of criminal justice
policies, zoning and land use consideration.
Fiscal and Budgetary Policy covers topics including political
implications of the governmental budget process, revenue, debt and
treasury management and the functions of accounting and financial
reporting.
There's also an Investigation and Report class covering
analysis of special topics. Additional public administration classes
include Environmental Justice: The Impacts of Pollution Upon
Minority and Low-Income Populations Throughout the U.S., Dysfunctional
Craziness and Norms of Organizational Life, and When to Hold
'em and When to Fold 'em: Managing Conflict in Everyday Life.
SDSU's College of Extended Studies offers a wide variety of lifelong
learning classes, seminars, and certificate programs. Career advancement
courses are offered in many areas of management, leadership, and
quality improvement while self-enrichment courses range from astronomy
to web design. Additionally, the College offers over 25 certificate
